Composition Lessons in Edmond, OK
Composition lessons are for anyone who wants to write their own music, from a first melody to a full piece for orchestra. We teach composition to students 10 and up in Downtown Edmond, and you don’t need any music background to start. A $20 trial lesson is where we start.
Lessons are one on one, once a week, in person or online, with Mr. Callen, a symphonic composer who has premiered more than twenty works for orchestra, with commissions from the Oklahoma Historical Society and OK Mozart. Families are always welcome to sit in.
What composition students work on
If you’re new to music, that’s okay! We start with the building blocks, so early lessons may focus on reading music, theory, or some piano skills to help you hear and try out your ideas. From there, students learn how melody, harmony and rhythm fit together, and put it all to work writing their own pieces.
Students also learn to write their music down so other musicians can play it, whether it’s for their own instrument, a small group, or a whole ensemble. Every student gets our free Quill app at quill.soltanimusic.com, where they can write down an idea and hear it played back.
