Oud Lessons in Edmond, OK
The oud is the Arabic lute, the heart of Middle Eastern music for more than a thousand years. We teach oud to students 10 and up in Downtown Edmond, whether you’re brand new, a guitarist who wants a new sound, or someone who grew up around this music and wants to finally play it. A $20 trial lesson is where we start.
Lessons are one on one, once a week, in person or online, with Mr. Callen, who has performed traditional Arabic and original music on the oud across the United States for more than twenty years, and he teaches both Arabic and Turkish music. Students will need their own oud for lessons. Families are always welcome to sit in.
What oud students work on
We begin with holding the oud and the risha (the pick) and getting a clean, warm sound, and then get straight into music. Students learn the maqamat, the scales at the heart of Arabic and Turkish music, along with its rhythms, a little improvisation, and both traditional and original pieces.
Oud students get to perform with other students during the year, and nobody has to be perfect to join in. Every student also gets our free practice app with a tuner, a metronome, and music games.
